Caen, Abbey church of the Holy Trinity (Abbaye-aux-Dames)
The Abbey church of the Holy Trinity (Abbaye-aux-Dames) was founded between 1059, the date of the pontifical absolution of William and Mathilda, and 1066 when the Abbey church of the Trinité was dedicated. The choir was completed in 1083. From the beginning of the 12th century, the church was subjected to major transformations; the façade between the two towers was rebuilt and the construction of a new apse was started. Having suffered significant damage during the Hundred Years War, the Abbey suffered at the hands of the Protestants devastations of 1562. After the French Revolution, the nuns decided to renovate their abbey, but in 1790 they were expelled and a barracks installed in the convent buildings. The abbey was in an advanced stage of ruin at the beginning of the 19th century, when it was the home of a beggars hostel and then from 1823 the new Hôtel-Dieu. Major restoration works were undertaken between 1825 and 1889.
