Caen (Calvados), Abbey church of the Holy Trinity (Abbaye-aux-Dames)

Capital

First third of the 12th century

This column capital originates from the Trinité church, in the Abbaye-aux-Dames, in Caen (Calvados). It was carved in limestone during the first third of the 12th century.
The corbel is ornamented with beaded interlacing patterns and acanthus flowers in flat relief, with the point turning downwards. The console carries a curious mask, which is also in low relief. Below it is a cavity, probably hollowed out at a later date.
