Caen (Calvados), Abbey church of the Holy Trinity (Abbaye-aux-Dames) Capital First third of the 12th century

This column capital originates from the Trinité church, in the Abbaye-aux-Dames, in Caen (Calvados). It was carved in limestone during the first third of the 12th century.
Juxtaposed almond motifs form the corbel. A slight protuberance in the corner is reminiscent of the corner scroll of capitals derived from the Corinthian style. On the completed face, the semicircular sections are underlined by a simple or moulded foliage decoration and the abacus is separated from the corbel by a groove.
