Aidone, Enna

St. Michael's Tower

Probable date: first half of 12th century

In the 11th century, the town of Aidone received a colony of Lombards (northern Italians), who had come in the wake of the Normans. Traces of this "foreign" enclave are still evident in the local dialect and in a few surviving buildings dating from the 11th century (see Santa Maria La Cava). However, the ruins of St. Michael’s Tower date from a later period (12th century). Norman influence is evident in the blind pointed arches supported by dosserets and slim columns and the horizontal and arched mouldings, which are reminiscent of buildings in Palermo erected during the monarchy.
