Barons

Roger of Montgomery (died 1094)

A Norman baron, viscount of the Hiémois region, Roger de Montgomery was granted land in Sussex and Shropshire after the Conquest. In 1070 William the Conqueror made him Earl of Shrewsbury. In 1067-9 Roger had built Shrewsbury castle and in c.1080 he founded Shrewsbury abbey where he is buried. Roger married Mabel, heiress of the Bellême family, and their son Robert would be a man of great power, usually in opposition to the crown. In 1070-4 Roger built a castle known as Hen Domen at Montgomery in mid Wales. He briefly supported Bishop Odo in the revolt against William Rufus in 1087, but is principally known for his campaigns in central Wales. In 1093 he and his son Hugh conquered Ceredigion (Cardiganshire) and built Cardigan castle.
