Richard Drengot of Aversa, prince of Capua
After having founded the first Norman county in southern Italy, the Drengots acquired the first principality. In 1062, in fact, after a long conflict, Rainulf’s heir, Richard of Aversa, expelled the last Lombard prince, Pandulf IV, from Capua, taking possession of the city. In 1059, at the synod of Melfi, Pope Nicholas II officially recognized him as prince of Capua.
