Barons

Maio de Bari, " admiral of admirals " of Sicily († 1160)

The son of the Barese Leo and brother of Stephen, Maio had a brilliant career at William I’s court, eventually becoming admiratus admiratorum (admiral of admirals). He pursued a policy, based on subterfuge and deception, of repressing feudal autonomy (and he may have plotted against the king himself), provoking a rebellion of the baronage that culminated in his assassination: in November 1160 the baron Matthew Bonell attacked him in a Palermo street and killed him.
