Hubert Walter (died 1205)

Hubert Walter was one of the most distinguished churchmen and government officials of his era. With the advantage of being educated by his uncle by marriage, Ranulf de Glanville, Henry II's Chief Justiciar, Hubert became Dean of York in 1186. In 1189 he became Bishop of Salisbury and went on Crusade to the Holy Land with Baldwin, the then Archbishop of Canterbury. After Baldwin's death in November 1190 Hubert took charge of the English party at the siege of Acre until the arrival of King Richard I. Hubert remained a loyal companion of Richard after the king was captured returning from the Crusade in 1192, and was made Archbishop of Canterbury. In 1193 Hubert became Chief Justiciar and ran the government of England while Richard fought his wars in France. In 1195 Hubert also became papal legate. On the accession of King John in 1199 he became Royal Chancellor until his death in July 1205.
