Anacletus II, antipope (1130- 38))

On Honorius II’s death in 1130, Anacletus was the pope elected by the Roman faction of the Pierleoni, supported by the people, while the nobility elected Innocent II. Although Innocent had the majority of the European sovereigns behind him, Anacletus was only backed by Roger II of Sicily, whom he crowned in Palermo in December 1130. After Anacletus’s death in January 1138, Innocent became the universally recognized pope.
