La-Rue-Saint-Pierre (Seine-Maritime) Enamelled plate Mid-12th century,

This plate which originates from the decoration on a binding, a portable altar or more probably a cross, is decorated with an eagle with spread wings, with a halo around its head, perched on a book. This is symbol of Saint John the Evangelist as confirmed by the inscription Johannes engraved vertically on the plate. Two four lobed flowers surround the bird. The figures are enamelled in cobalt blue, turquoise green, yellow and white, and the background is gilded. The strong silhouette of the bird means that this object can be identified as being within the Norman sphere of le Mans, under the influence of the Limousin workshops.
