Abbey crosier

Third quarter of the 12th century

The crosier has a cylindrical cartridge bordered by rows of pearls. The knot in the form of a flattened sphere and engraved with flower patterns extends with a hexagonal sectioned stem. This rolls up into a scroll which opens out into an attractive foliage motif enclosing granular fruits. The many comparisons to which this motif gives rise mean that this object can be very well located within the convergence of the artistic currents originating in Normandy, the Ile de France and the Anglo-Saxon world. The tip, which is hollow, and conical in form, includes a knot in the form of a flattened sphere.
