Ouistreham (Calvados)
Church of St Samson

Capital

Second third of the 12th century

This half column capital originates from the church of Saint-Samson (Ouistreham, Calvados). It was carved in limestone during the second third of the 12th century.
Under the abacus decorated with saw teeth, the corners were filled with animal heads, now partly lost. From their mouths flow plant motifs which develop on the corbel, culminating in pine cones arranged symmetrically.
