Frieze

Second third of the 12th century

This fragment of frieze originates from the church of Saint-Samson (Ouistreham, Calvados). It was carved in limestone during the second third of the 12th century.
Its semi-cylindrical shape is that of a half column tambour. This frieze is decorated with two similar rows of rounded small palms arranged in semicircles to form a shell motif. Between the two rows is a braid pattern simply ornamented with a broken line.
