The dropped initial painted on the reverse of folio 22 is unusual: the round body of the letter Q consists of four semi-circles paired off, creating a cruciform motif. Two concentric circles pass through the loops formed by this device. The tail of the letter features a winged dragon pointing his tongue upwards in the form of a dart. The various elements of the composition are highlighted with the lively, bright colours used to animate them. Other contemporary Norman manuscripts also use this type of geometrical structure, but these motifs are also found in sculpted decorations, for example in Fiquefleur, near Honfleur.
