Saint Gregory, Moralia in Job (books XVII-XXII)
Jumièges, 11th century (4th quarter)
116 f. 308 x 230 mm.

Bibliothèque municipale de Rouen, ms. 497 ( I 24 )

This manuscript begins with a magnificent historiated dropped initial: inside a letter Q, whose tail is represented by a dragon, there is a representation of a monk at his desk. He is holding flat the book in which he is writing, using a scraper.
The author of this initial, who may have been trained by the master of the Jumièges bible, uses inks of different colours in the manner of the Anglo-Saxon artists: red for a monks attire, black for the head and hands, on a green background.
