Door knocker

12th century

Bronze door knocker, one of a pair of ornaments from the basilica at Bari. It is decorated with the classical representation of a mask of a lion holding in its mouth the actual knocker piece – missing here. It is mounted on a strip with geometrical pierced-work patterns. The highly stylized figurative work is characteristic of Apulian art from the late 11th century to early 12th century.
