Church of St Ouen

As a former dependency of the abbey of Saint-Ouen in Rouen, the church of Rots probably owes its exceptional size to this patronage. The transept and choir are of the gothic period. The portal of the west is a restoration in the Romanesque style carried out in 1910. But the large nave remains from the Romanesque period dating from the 12th century with interior walls decorated with a continuous band of blind arches.
The sculpted decoration is representative of the trends in Romanesque art in the second quarter of the 12th century and of its relations with England. Stone slabs re-used on the walls of the tower are older and may be vestiges of a cycle devoted to the life of saint Ouen.
