Castle of Castropignano
Tower of Oratino
It was erected on the site of a pre-existing Samnite fortification, of which two concentric enceintes still remain. The only entrance, with a wooden cantilevered structure, is on the first floor and could only be reached using a retractable ladder or ropes. The tower stands directly on a rock foundation with a low escarpment. The masonry work is very precise, with regular horizontal and continuous rows on all four sides. The cornerstones are larger. The remains of a barrel vault on the topmost floor and an ogival cistern in the basement still survive.
