Saint Gregory. Moralia in Job (books XVII-XXXV)
Saint-Pierre de Préaux, 11th – 12th centuries.
241 f. 355 x 240 mm.

Bibliothèque municipale de Rouen, ms. 498 ( A 123 )

This manuscript contains 18 initials which are among the masterpieces of Romanesque illuminating. All are historiated: some narrate episodes from the life of Job, others illustrate scenes from monastic life: a copyist monk in folio 26 v°, elsewhere a monk working at a forge, or celebrating mass. In folio 72 v°, the letter P is populated by four characters, one of whom is carrying a bundle of sticks. The influence of this master is found in other artists from Préaux.
